How to pick the right Spanish voice over talent

According to the U.S. Census figures, the Mexican American population makes up over 64% of the latin population compared to other latin groups such as Puerto Rican, Cuban, and even Spain which is very tiny. The majority of that population is in the southwest states of Texas, California, New Mexico, and Arizona. It would make sense to hire a voice talent from this origin to record a commercial that is trying to reach that market. Hiring for example someone from Cuba would be like hiring an Irishman to do an English commercial in England unless of course it’s about Irish whiskey. It would sound ridiculous and probably would offend those in that geographical area. Or how about someone from Louisiana recording a commercial for a business in New England. Do you get the picture? I have seen hundreds of thousands of dollars thrown out the window by agencies that picked the wrong talent. I would know, I worked in ad agencies and radio stations that targeted this market. With the Hispanic market already at around 1 trillion dollars nationally, you would think that companies are a bit more careful. But who pays the price? The advertiser as usual.
